The wise monks, together, embody the proverbial principle of "not seeing evil, not hearing evil, not speaking evil."
According to the traditional Japanese belief, they make reference to the three monkeys: Mizaru, covering the eyes, that do not see the evil; Kikazaru, covering his ears, who hears no evil; and Iwazaru, covering his mouth, who does not speak evil.
Sometimes there is a fourth monkey pictured with the other three; the latter, Shizaru, which symbolizes the principle of "doing no evil."
